I originally bought this book considering the preview didn't seem too bad and there were some good reviews on here. At first it started out okay, but and so it quick devolved into something I really had to push myself to go through. Fortunately it was brusk.

I originally bought this book because the preview didn't seem too bad and in that location were some good reviews on hither. At first information technology started out okay, but then it quick devolved into something I really had to push myself to get through. Fortunately it was brusque.

All of the characters act as if they are emotionally expressionless. They don't seem to take much of a reaction to any of the major things that happen. A lot of characters dice in this volume, but their deaths are unremarkably followed upward by the family playing a game together or a giant party. (view spoiler)[Aspen comes face-to-confront with the person she had been traumatized past, and when he forces her to bulldoze his car for him then he can get away, her only response is "fair enough". (hide spoiler)] Events in the store are just plowed through, from one thing to the adjacent. Which is fine with me, considering that meant I got to exist over with it sooner.

In that location wasn't actually a character I liked. Sid behaved like a cringy teenager despite supposedly being around 500-years-old. Aspen defined herself as someone who doesn't do annihilation without a good reason, merely immediately after being asked why she did something, she responds with "lol idk". Tori was the stereotypical over-the-elevation side-kick that really doesn't do anything. Ella was the 32-year-old that hung out with teenagers. At commencement I thought Pearl would be the simply grapheme I could mildly tolerate, until she pulled out this precious stone of a comment in response to a graphic symbol's rape story:

"Sid, I lived with the humans for x years, and well-nigh girls would only share that story with someone for one of 2 reasons. Either they were looking for attention or they completely loved and trusted the person they were sharing information technology with."

I couldn't curlicue my eyes hard plenty at that. Another tidbit that stood out to me just isn't actually important to the story is the fact that Ella had a literal grizzly deport in her basement. How the hell they managed to get a full-sized grizzly behave downwardly steps and into a basement is beyond me, fifty-fifty if it had been knocked out.

Overall, this story wasn't for me.

Aspen lives her life on the border, not to mention her love for a notoriously dangerous species, Dragons. Set up in modern day North America Aspen lives in your average teenage life. I dearest the concept of this globe, the fact that Dragons take ever existed inside our modern day society, and how nosotros take adapted our world around them.

Except that we don't actually go an explanation of how we adjusted effectually them, where they came from, why they still exist. Goose egg. Basically we go some dragons dropped in and are expected to figure it out ourselves. I dear a good imagination but I beloved a meliorate caption fifty-fifty more than. Information technology felt strange that people didn't really understand these creatures and yet left them lonely. I couldn't help imaging large game hunts people trying to destroy them or capture them. Because unfortunately we live in a world where oft times people destroy, or at least attempt to destroy, what they fear or do not empathize.

Skillful start for a dragon series. Interesting ideas and characters. I liked the fast-paced way of telling information technology and the mysteries left behind.

Obsidian was the dragon. He was only a normal one that didn't wait to be nominated someone so important. Sid was just trying to figure out what to do with his life now.

Anyway, the story is interesting and I enjoyed getting out of the "romance field" for a chip. I'chiliad curious about what'll happen in the next volume.

It's my own error, you know. Like-minded to review one of her books. I get a copy and starting time reading it, and that's information technology. Goose egg else gets washed. I'thousand totally hooked.

Warning: Although I don't feel at that place are spoilers here, I do mention some central facts well-nigh the volume. If yous desire to exist completely surprised, take my word for information technology that this is worth your time and cease reading this review. Get read the book instead.

Although it's sometimes hard to tell who the protagonist is in a volume with multiple points of view, Aspen and Obsidian are our heroes and main characters. Aspen loves dragons, and she volition do nearly annihilation just to become shut enough or a get a good picture of one. Obsidian is a dragon, and after two devastating things happen (one of them being named King, which he hates), he has to spend 10 years as a man before he can officially take the throne. Of grade, they fall in love. Merely there are obstacles, just like every skilful love story. Sid (our human class of Obsidian) reminds Aspen too much of a very bad feel with a male child, and Sid isn't immune to fall in love with a human. Am I proverb also much here? Or is this just getting you interested in reading? Because it's awesome.

What I liked almost the book: Loth draws you in like a bug zapper. With this book, she beats the "prologue curse" too, which is beauteous in and of itself. Obsidian's grapheme development is my favorite as far as characters go. I probably like him more than I like Aspen. But who wouldn't? And a fantastic love story; all of the stumbling blocks are there. Can a dragon and a human being really love each other? The volume will keep you guessing all kinds of things, all the manner up until the stop. I enjoy subplots too, then I'chiliad glad this book had a lot of them.

What I didn't like: I felt like in that location were a few moments that dragged, but that was it. After a book keeps you that high all the fourth dimension, it'southward necessary to have a minute to dull down. For instance, Aspen is chasing the notes Obsidian leaves her it feels a little slow, but fun.

What I have a honey/detest human relationship with: CLIFFHANGERS! It was like reading the Iron Traitor, then at the last page going "WHAT?" Yes, those capital letters mean I'm shouting! No fair. Now I have to torturously expect for the 2d book to come up out. BOO!

I give this volume 4 out of 5 stars. Definitely worth the read, and highly recommended, peculiarly if you lot similar Julie Kagawa, Kiersten White, or Aprilynne Thruway.

Obsidian is a quick read at around 200 pages but it'due south compelling enough to brand you want to read straight through.

Our MC is Aspen, which is a proper noun a really love here. Information technology shows her outdoorsy nature. Aspen loves taking pictures of dragon, even though nearly people remember they eat humans. Then, we have Obsidian, the newly-minted dragon king who must spend ten years in his human being form before he tin can have his place as ruler. Aspen meets Obsidian in dragon form and she's in absolute awe. Nonetheless, the human being version, Sid, isn't one she cares for.

The majority of Obsidian is spent looking at both sides of this dearest story. Sid spends his time trying to win Aspens affections, while she spends her fourth dimension actively fugitive him. In betwixt, we meet a lot of other dragons and we learn more virtually the dragon way of life.

The reason I but gave information technology 3 stars was the lack of character development. There's a lot of telling instead of showing going on. Aspen keeps saying how she'due south so awesome, she's such a daredevil and an adrenaline junkie, she does things no one else would dare to exercise. First, she never does any of these things, the well-nigh unsafe affair she does is talk to a dragon. Secondly, yous're not as cool as yous think you are if y'all keep having to tell everyone nigh it. Information technology's similar those hipster kids who go around telling everyone they're totally not mainstream and they recall and then differently than anybody else.

The romance likewise needed a lot of piece of work. They fell in dearest pretty speedily but it didn't really develop. It just kind of happened betwixt ane page and the adjacent. Actually, it was a chip nonchalant for Obsidian. Suddenly he decided he'due south in beloved.

One final thing I want to mention is that cover. It's fantastic and I love it.

Aspen is a bit of a daredevil. She is the simply one in her sleepy little town about Yellowstone brave enough to try to become close enough to dragons to photo them. It is this bravery that captures the notice of Obsidian, the newly appointed King of the local dragon community as he fulfills his required 10 year study experience as a human. Aspen actually doesn't similar "Sid" the human, merely they bond over dragons. They seem to exist the only ones that think dragons are not to blame in the contempo murders Aspen is a scrap of a daredevil. She is the only one in her sleepy picayune boondocks virtually Yellowstone brave enough to try to get close enough to dragons to photograph them. It is this bravery that captures the find of Obsidian, the newly appointed Male monarch of the local dragon community as he fulfills his required 10 twelvemonth study experience as a human. Aspen really doesn't similar "Sid" the human, only they bond over dragons. They seem to be the only ones that recall dragons are not to arraign in the recent murders of hikers, but they are incorrect, a dragon is responsible. Sid and the dragons must find out which dragon is responsible before the unsteady truce with humans is dissolved. Aspen thinks if she gets merely the right photograph, she might exist able to help.

Eh, this i was alright. I tin can't put my finger on exactly what I didn't like. It felt a little more immature than I was expecting. Also, there are a few things that I think should have been explained in this book and not left to hereafter installments - for example, Obsidian and Aspen end up with these magical tattoos that have some dragon linguistic communication in them, simply Sid just thinks "Oh, I'll interpret them later", nevertheless the existence of those tattoos put them each in danger with the dragon council. Kind of an of import particular. I noticed that the ratings for subsequent books in the series improve, then I'm willing to stick information technology out for another book or two.

I take stalled for a day reviewing this book... Honestly, though, I don't really know why. Obsidian by Kimberly Loth was a pleasant surprise. To be honest, I totally estimate a book past its cover (admit it, everyone secretly does) and when I looked upon this cover my thoughts were something similar, "Ew, why am I going to read this once again?" I hate the cover, but I was charmed with what I found inside.

The story follows a girl named Aspen. She lives the normal life... almost. Ever since she was a picayune daughter, Aspen was fascinated past the dragons that lived in the park next door. Even though she learned so much well-nigh them, she still has much more to learn. One of these things is that all possible dragon male monarch heirs must spend 10 years in their human being form. Obsidian is called to be the next dragon kings, but as he becomes homo a creature starts killing people in the park. Will Aspen solve who is killing humans before its too late?

Besides the cover and the writing, the story was really prissy. I enjoyed the plot with some minor dislikes, just I'll become into those in a second. I recollect that this book is appropriate for lovers of Jennifer L. Armentrout, because their main genre is like, paranormal romance, but they both take a footling bit different take on it.

I didn't like the cover, but I already talked nigh that. Other than that, I hated the writing. Not gonna lie, the book was one of those trashy books that yous but detect fun to read, like City of Bones. Sometimes, though the writing just became really forceful, then I had some major "stopping" moments whenI had to have a suspension or I would end up in a reading slump. The plot pretty much satisfied me, but I establish Obsidian to exist annoying... sometimes. What I mean by this is that when he (view spoiler)[ transformed into a dragon to talk to Aspen to make her like him (hide spoiler)] I idea that that was like cheating on his part, and a blitz in their relationship development. Also, Ella and Theo's relationship came out of nowhere. What?

Lately, I take been on a "really great book!" spree. This ane didn't break it. Overall I liked the concept of dragons becoming humans. It was a concept that isn't used that much in immature developed fiction except for Fablehaven: The Complete Series Boxed Set, at to the lowest degree that was the only example I could think of. I also found the colors of the dragons to be quite interesting. I know that the blackness dragon is the dragon king, but do the colors of the other dragons symbolize anything? Or are they simply random? I wish that these questions will exist answered in the side by side novels. I liked the human relationship between Tori and Aspen. Fifty-fifty though "love became hate," I hope that they become friends again, because what they have is something that is really rare.

With this volume, we must look behind the cover and read through the starting time few chapters (they are short, then don't worry) to find the true happiness hidden behind.

2.5 stars. I liked parts of information technology and I am engaged in the story enough that I want to find out what happens side by side but it suffers from the usual YA flaws of insta-love, inattentive, clueless parents and unbelievable coincidences. Obsidian is a dragon that actually merely wanted to coast through life with Skye, his girlfriend/dragon. He was ane of several dragons (not blood brothers but called brothers) who would someday become king of the dragons. Obsidian didn't desire it. He was also supposed to spend 10 years equally a human and then he could read and learn. He put that off until the last minute. That terminal infinitesimal is when he institute himself non appearing as a gilded dragon anymore but a black ane. There is only one black dragon and that dr Obsidian is a dragon that really only wanted to coast through life with Skye, his girlfriend/dragon. He was i of several dragons (non blood brothers but chosen brothers) who would someday become king of the dragons. Obsidian didn't want information technology. He was likewise supposed to spend 10 years every bit a human so he could read and learn. He put that off until the last infinitesimal. That last minute is when he establish himself not appearing as a gilt dragon anymore only a black i. In that location is simply one blackness dragon and that dragon is the male monarch.

Now Obsidian is in human form with the proper noun of Sid. One of his brothers is to be with him and assistance him while in man grade. He needs to stay in human being form and not bond with anyone, specially not with a man. That would mean death.

Aspen is a nature junky and loves dragons. I day she sees a black dragon land about her and she but stares at him. She idea while she was watching him that a snake bit her but when she looks downwards after the dragon flies abroad that it is a tattoo that appeared on her ankle. She doesn't know what it means. Aspen has also had an overwhelming bad experience with a guy who looks a lot similar Sid. She stays away from Sid because it brings back bad memories.

But Aspen can't help it as she is drawn to Sid. Sid can't resist either. He had no idea humans felt this way. He can't stay away from her. Even though she loathes him. Sid tells her about a dragon that volition be at a certain spot at a sure time so she can run across him in dragon form since that seems to be the only thing Aspen wants. But Sid is the dragon, Obsidian that she sees and finds attracting.

At present people are being eaten by dragons. Sid knows it has to be one dragon because dragons don't eat humans. If they can't find who is doing it humans may go to war with them.

At present the activeness and mystery gets going. Who is doing this? Why is Aspen then taken with Obsidian and Sid? Can Sid keep his feelings virtually Aspen a hole-and-corner from the dragons? Because if he tin't, he volition be killed. And what does the tattoo hateful on Aspens ankle?

I loved the activeness. I loved the mystery. I had some thought of what may happen just did non gauge the full bear on of what did happen. I enjoyed watching Sid learn to similar being human. I liked Aspen and her adventurous spirit. I liked the thought of the story.

My only negatives are that sometimes I had to reread sentences because a give-and-take was left out. I also felt confused about this Marc guy. Nosotros don't know nigh him to over half way in the book and it bothered me that the reader didn't know about him. I couldn't experience Sid'due south hurting if I didn't know what had happened to her and Marc. I besides didn't get why information technology would be Sid'south death if he cruel for a human and bonded with her.

Just, I can't wait to get my hands on the next book because the ending was a cliff hanger and I am scared for Aspen. I want her and Obsidian/Sid to exist together. I desire to know more about the dragons. It was a smashing story and I want more right now! This book promises to be the outset of a great series!

Aspen is the danger child. Her parents are park rangers and then she'south constantly out in the wild doing crazy things, like chasing dragons. I love that dragons are part of the real world just no one knows they are shifters, that's a highly guarded secret. Until Aspen meets Obsidian. Obsidian is a black dragon, who will become rex. He doesn't really want to exist rex but it's his duty. And also his duty is to spend years as a human to ameliorate relate. He hates humans, and yet he totally falls for Aspen and it's confronting all the rules. He could be dethroned for it and she could be killed. Oh and there's a dragon going effectually eating people. It's bad press and both Sid and Aspen are trying to prove dragons are proficient and don't want to harm people. I have my suspects in who the bad dragon is only I'm not 100% positive and there's a petty left open at the terminate of the book for book two. Aspen loves dragons and everything about them. She is constantly putting herself in danger to get closer to them so when she meets the black dragon and he marks her, things get crazy. Aspen fights her allure to Sid for very painful reasons and I totally cried for her when she finally admitted it all to Sid. I wanted to cry. And I likewise loved the side characters, her cafe boss, her slightly weird bff who isn't such a dainty friend, bad Marking, Sid's mentor and his sister. The characters are all well written.

The writing is fantastic and the plot kept me glued to the pages. The world building is also wonderful and I loved how the author created the back story with a underground dragon and saving Aspen. But beware, there'south a little cliff hanger, hence my needing book two immediately!! I am a total fan and I can't wait to see how this ane will play out. 5 DRAGON PAWS!!!!

The heroine, Aspen, scudded along with near the same emotional depth for all situations -- had luncheon, machine broke downward, lost a friend, got scolded by authority figure, recalled traumatic event, got dressed up for big date, was late to class -- ho hum, it's still. Her insistence on vilifying the new dearest interest because he strongly resembles a past tormentor is specially loathsome given her lack of emotional response in the other situations -- a friend dies and she smiles and waves to his parents when seeing them out and about simply days after the funeral, but sulks and pouts and flounces off without explanation for weeks after coming together the poor boy begetting the unfortunate resemblance, until she gets over it and gets with him, knowing her best friend has a huge shell on the guy. The perfunctory writing does little to disguise how shockingly selfish those deportment are; I certainly wouldn't want my teen reading this and feeling similar the examples were acceptable. Gauge a book by its embrace, deed in your ain self-interest regardless of whom yous might hurt, that kind of thing. By the end of the book I was actually offended past the behaviors of the characters -- and then the author used the give-and-take "drug" instead of "dragged" and cut me loose forever. I won't be reading anything else from this series or this author.

Sigh. Instalove, instalove everywhere!

Everything happened so fast, I swear I got whiplash. Likewise many questions left unanswered, even if I can predict how a few things volition turn out in the side by side book. At that place are so many holes in the story that I hope gets improved on in the sequel.

I enjoyed the series, but the first volume was definitely my favorite. The tertiary book felt like a lot of repeat from the beginning volume, just with unlike characters.

Actually cool and interesting characters and a pretty unique plot.
Kimberly Loth can't determine where she wants to settle down. She's lived in Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Utah, California, Oregon, and South Carolina. She finally decided to make the leap and leave the U.S. behind for a few years. Currently, she lives in Cairo, Egypt with her hubby and two kids.

She is a high school math instructor by day (please don't hold that confronting her) and YA author by night.
